Summary
A Virgin Australia Airbus A330 sustained a bird strike to the left windshield while descending through 3,000 ft on approach to Perth Airport. The outer pane of the captain's windshield was cracked. The aircraft landed without incident; no injuries to 238 passengers and 9 crew.
Investigation Findings (4)
- 01The bird, identified as a Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, was struck at approximately 180 KCAS.
- 02The inner pane of the windshield maintained structural integrity; the windshield design performed as certificated.
- 03Perth Airport wildlife management was notified; the cockatoo roost area was identified 2 nm east of the final approach path.
- 04No systemic safety issues identified.
