Engine power loss following bird strike — Cessna 172S

Summary
During final approach to Bankstown Airport, the aircraft struck a flock of starlings, resulting in significant engine roughness and partial power loss. The pilot declared PAN-PAN and landed without further incident. Post-flight inspection revealed bird ingestion damage to the engine air filter and a cracked cylinder head.
Investigation Findings (4)
- 01Bird strike occurred at approximately 500 ft AGL on final approach to runway 11R.
- 02Engine continued to run but with reduced power, enabling a safe landing.
- 03ATSB found no organisational safety issues. Bankstown Airport wildlife management procedures were reviewed.
- 04Airport bird control program subsequently extended to include additional deterrent measures.
