Summary

An Alliance Airlines Fokker 70 overran the runway threshold on landing at Olympic Dam Airport following a longer-than-normal ground roll in light tailwind conditions. The aircraft came to rest on the overrun area with minor damage to the nose landing gear. None of the 48 passengers or 4 crew were injured.

Investigation Findings (4)

  1. 01Approach speed was 6 knots fast at the threshold due to a speed control error.
  2. 02Thrust reversers deployed normally but autobrake was disarmed after an aircraft systems warning was actioned.
  3. 03Olympic Dam runway length provides minimal margins with a tailwind; Alliance Airlines introduced a policy of no tailwind landings at Olympic Dam.
  4. 04No systemic safety issues were identified by ATSB.
