Summary
A privately operated Cirrus SR22 entered an accelerated stall after executing a go-around at Armidale Airport in IMC. The aircraft entered a spiral dive and impacted terrain 4 km north of the airport. The pilot was fatally injured. The CAPS parachute was not deployed.
Investigation Findings (5)
- 01The pilot held a PPL with no instrument rating. Weather at the time of the accident was IMC.
- 02The pilot had conducted an ILS approach to below decision height without suitable clearance.
- 03Spatial disorientation during the go-around resulted in a rapidly developing spiral dive.
- 04ATSB recommended CASA review the licensing requirements and training standards for operations in marginal VFR/IMC conditions.
- 05The CAPS was not activated, consistent with ATSB research showing CAPS activation rates in fatal accidents remain low.
