Summary

A Jetstar Boeing 737 MAX 8 ingested a sulphur-crested cockatoo into the right CFM LEAP-1B engine during initial climb from Sydney Airport. An engine surge warning illuminated; the crew reduced thrust and the engine continued to run. The aircraft returned to Sydney for an engineering inspection. No injuries to 186 passengers and 6 crew.

Investigation Findings (4)

  1. 01Post-flight borescope inspection revealed fan blade leading edge nicks consistent with bird impact.
  2. 02The engine continued to produce thrust within normal limits throughout the event.
  3. 03Sydney Airport wildlife management identified a new cockatoo roosting area near the departure end of runway 34L.
  4. 04Airport operations implemented additional hazing activities around the new roost area.
