Summary
A Jetstar Boeing 737 MAX 8 ingested a sulphur-crested cockatoo into the right CFM LEAP-1B engine during initial climb from Sydney Airport. An engine surge warning illuminated; the crew reduced thrust and the engine continued to run. The aircraft returned to Sydney for an engineering inspection. No injuries to 186 passengers and 6 crew.
Investigation Findings (4)
- 01Post-flight borescope inspection revealed fan blade leading edge nicks consistent with bird impact.
- 02The engine continued to produce thrust within normal limits throughout the event.
- 03Sydney Airport wildlife management identified a new cockatoo roosting area near the departure end of runway 34L.
- 04Airport operations implemented additional hazing activities around the new roost area.
