Summary
A Cirrus SR22T on an IFR approach and a Cessna 172 on a VFR training circuit came within approximately 150 m of each other during a simultaneous clearance conflict at Archerfield Airport. TCAS activated in the SR22T; the Cessna had no TCAS. Both pilots took avoiding action; no collision occurred.
Investigation Findings (4)
- 01ATC clearances to both aircraft were issued concurrently without awareness of the conflict.
- 02The Cessna was outside radar coverage during the critical period.
- 03ATSB recommended mandatory TCAS for all aircraft operating in Class D airspace.
- 04Airservices Australia revised the sequencing procedure for simultaneous IFR and VFR operations at Archerfield.
